Patch Picks: 5 Ways to Make the Earth a Better Place

In honor of Earth Day and every day, take advantage of some of these wonderful activities that help the planet and make our city a more beautiful place to live.

  1. Compost- Composting is considered one of the best things you can do to help the environment, as it reduces the amount of refuse by placing non-animal food scraps, yard waste and garden waste into a bin which eventually turns to soil and can be used back in your own garden. Compost bins are available through the Newport Clean City program at Spring Recycling Day.
  2. Recycle Bulk Items- Items typically sent to the trash can actually be recycled at Newport’s Spring Recycling Day on April 30. Items such as cooking oil, electronics, rigid plastics, bikes, clothing, household items, and more will all be collected at this twice annual event.
  3. Clean Up the City- Newport will take part in the Great American Clean Up Rhode Island on Saturday, Apr. 23 with groups meeting on the Point, , , , and . For more information on getting involved, click here.
  4. Shop Local- Whether you're looking for fresh fish, fresh vegetables, beautiful clothing, artwork or jewelry, Newport's got it. Shopping local means a lower carbon footprint as the product doesn’t travel very far and therefore uses fewer fossil fuels to get to you. As an added bonus, it puts more money back into the local economy.
  5. Enjoy the Nature Newport has to Offer- The Newport Tree Society is holding its first Newport Arboretum Week from April 22 to 30. Enjoy tree walks throughout the city, tree planting demonstrations and much more for both kids and adults. Click here for more information.
