Local Man Stabbed to Death in Gould Street Murder

Police arrested a 42-year-old man who was charged with stabbing a local Newport man to death Wednesday night.

A man who police say has no known address has been arrested for allegedly stabbing and killing a local Newport man.

Police officials said they believe the two men knew each other.

At approximately 11:12 p.m. on Wednesday night the Newport Police Department received a 9-1-1 call for an assault in progress at 53 1⁄2 Gould Street.

Officers arrived a short time later and found 44-year-old Anthony E. Simmons of 53 1⁄2 Gould Street, Apt B, Newport, who had been stabbed several times. Simmons was transported to the Newport Hospital emergency room by the Newport Fire Department rescue and was pronounced dead at 11:40 p.m.

Officials said they had been several witness reports of the two men arguing before the incident.

At 11:18 pm, officers located and arrested 42-year-old Joseph Perryman just north of Gould Street on, a short distance away from the crime scene.

During the investigation police recovered a knife believed to be used in the incident, as well as clothing worn by Perryman during the assault.

Perryman is being charged with murder and is scheduled to be arraigned this morning in 2nd Division Court.

Newport police are actively processing the crime scene and the investigation is continuing.

Lets go NPD. I don't think we need 4 cop cars at a DUI stop. Shouldn't you use those units keeping the streets safe.

@michael- when you find the weapon for you and you get attacked, tell them to look here(gun barrel), smile and wait for the flash.

Tom I've flagged your post as inappropriate and I hope it's taken down. Why don't you come out from behind your computer and say such an awful thing to the faces of a grieving family? You should be ashamed of yourself.

So, a tragic domestic dispute means the streets are unsafe? That's funky logic. Or better yet, free association. My heart goes out to both families. Since one son is dead and the other will spend the rest of his life in prison. Two lives were wasted. So go buy your guns and act all big. Still doesn't make you less of a coward. Since, you know, buying the gun is the easy part. Pulling the trigger is the hard part.

@PRS- if you come after me with the intent to harm me and I have my weapon. Your going home in a body bag. It's not so much as trying or thinking one is tough because they have a gun. It's the fact that you have intent to do me harm. I am protecting myself or my family.

This isn't about buying guns for protection, this is about a man who lost his life. The comments Michael made were uncalled for. This was an argument that took a horrible turn, not a person just walking up to another person and stabbing them. Did you bother to think about the dead man's family Micheal? God forbid this had been your loved one and someone made similar comments... this site really does show how many ignorant, rude, stereotypical, prejudice, heartless people live in Newport.

@African Violet- Yup, I was waiting for it, and you didn't leave me waiting too long. Typical race baiting person who in terrible taste of this senseless tragedy has to interject race into the mix. No one cares what color Anthony is nor the person who committed the crime. You are the only one. This is a tragedy plain and simple. Take your racist behind and go hook up with the Rev. Al Sharpton. You'll probably feel much more comfortable hanging with haters. As far a discussion of guns in these comments? No one is suggesting going out and buyin a weapon and shooting anyone. The discussion is about the fact that crime has increased in the Newport area, if you haven't been paying attention. Because of that it is an option for some, not all, but some who may feel the need to protect themselves if God forbid, they were a potential victim of a crime. One person wrote that crime happens everywhere. Well that is true, but I don't live nor does my family live somewhere else. I am not so concerned if someone gets mugged in NYC. I'm more concerned if I am walking my dog down the street in Newport and I get assaulted for no apparent reason. I have a definite concern.

It seems to me the ones that scream the loudest about "ignorant, rude, stereotypical, prejudice, heartless people " are the one who are! White ,black yellow or purple WHO cares? Someone had died!

@Sean- Your absolutely correct. What difference does it make of race? Answer: NOTHING!!! People like African Violet need to look in the mirror and do a self check. If there was anything derogatory said about Tony, because of his race, you be damn skippy that everyone on here would give that individual a good piece of their mind. Seeing that nobody has though, it leads me to believe Miss African Violet herself is a racist and likes to plant those seeds. Let her go plant her garbage somewhere else.

Joe was not a homeless Newport man. He is married for 7 years and lived in providence. Jojo and Anthony are 1 st . Cousins.not play cousins but there mothers are sisters. This two men had a lot of positive family history together. And let it be known Anthony did 8 years or so for a murder he had commited in Virginia the same time his cousin joe did time for a different murder and joe did 11 years on a 14 year bid. They were even captured in Newport together in the late 80's and flown TOGETHER by the detectives to Virginia to face there warrants . Family outings , cookouts, Anthony coming to Jo'jo's house in providence, would epven bring his son Devin with him to spend the day at Jo & his wife's house. Anthony was at Jo'jo's wedding o.k. So it's a very very tragic family dispute that Never would of went down if both of those men(1st cousins mind u) were around people who truly cared/ real friends would have been able to diffuse their argument . It's not the 1 st time these two argued but sadly it's the last time due to drugs and alcohol used that night has ended their friendship & hurt their family. Now that's the truth.

I in no way am trying to say anything bad about ant. I loved ant also I knew him since high school days also went to school with his sister. My point is there are sooo many
misunderstandings and untrue things being said and bottom line neither one of those men were saints. Who is??? This family lost two members that horrible night.

There are way to many untrue stories. I am a member of the family in the correction that needs to be made is, Anthony has never been convicted of murder. The incident that is being referred to back in the late eighties early nineties. Anthony was convicted of intent to do bodily harm. Not murder! He served 5 years in Virginia for this.
Another truth to the story is drugs and alcohol did not play a role in this incident, if you knew Anthony you knew that he did not really drink and the only drove that was found in his system was marijuana. The 2 men were first cousins and yes we as a family are all affected but nobody is more affected then Anthonys son Devin. This little boys heart has been ripped out of his chest and has felt this pain deep in his soul for the loss of his father. So I would like to people to think about this when the right things about his father and take into consideration that he can read all of this. He needs to cherish the memories of the love that him and his father shared not people talking about his father like this. Just consider who's reading this when you write comments
