newportFILM Presents January Mini-Fest
This Friday and Saturday, newportFILM boasts an action-packed weekend of not only film, but food and wine receptions, active post-film discussions and, as always, something for the little ones.
The traffic on the sidewalks have thinned, the days are shorter and weather has cooled off (well, sort of). It’s January and Newporters have set their sights on hibernation and the winter-time hunker-down. newportFILM, however, is giving you a reason to un-batten the hatches, liven up and celebrate your thriving community through a weekend of film.
On Friday, January 13th at the Casino Theater, newportFILM will be showing a preview screening of The Island President at 7 p.m., with a wine and food reception to precede it at 6 p.m.
This environmental documentary tells the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives and his heart-felt battle to not only stop, but reverse global warming and the ever-present rising sea-level. The Island President won the Audience Award for a Documentary at this past Toronto Film Festival and newportFILM will be screening it before it’s slated theater release of March 28th.
After the film, climate change expert Virginia Lee, of URI’s Coastal Resources Center, will be mediating questions and discussion alongside CRC colleague, Teresa Crean, and Annie Brett of Sailors for the Sea.
On Saturday night’s agenda is a screening of Rampart, starting at 7 p.m. at the Casino Theater, also with a wine and food reception starting at 6 p.m.
Starring Woody Harrelson as Officer Dave Brown, this is a story of a cop long ago unleashed from the rules of the Los Angeles Police Department where his shady history makes him an easy target for a corruption scandal. Rampart’s heavy-hitting cast also includes Ned Beatty, Ben Foster, Anne Heche, Ice Cube, Cynthia Nixon, Sigourey Weaver, Robin Wright and Steve Buscemi. The industry is buzzing with talk of a potential Oscar nod for Harrelson’s performance. This is a preview screening, as the film is not released to theaters until Feb. 10.
Novelist, professor, and former NYPD undercover detective Robert Leuci, will be leading a discussion surrounding the film’s themes and his experiences with morality and ethics erosion in the criminal justice system.
Tickets for both nights are $12 for film and Q&A only or $20 for wine and food reception, film and Q&A. Reception food will be provided by Salvation Café on both nights.
Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. is all for the kids at Salve Regina’s Megley Theater at the Antone Academic Center. The screening will take place in the Theater’s Black Box and will include popcorn and juice boxes. Tickets are $5 for children under 12 and $10 for adults.
Eleanor’s Secret is originally a French film dubbed in English with pro-literacy undertones. In this animated children's film, the viewer is brought to a magic library where all the characters from classic children’s books come alive. Recommended for ages three to eight.
Tickets for any film can be purchased at _www.newportFILM.com_ or at the door.
