Newport Police Log: Man Arrested for Attempted Break-In at Diegos

The following information was provided by the Newport Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

Stephen A. Vandenburgh, 36, of 3 Malbone Rd., Newport, was arrested around 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, for attempted breaking and entering, driving without a license and two active warrants.

On Dec. 24, police responded to a report of a possible attempted breaking and entering incident at Diegos. A security guard had chased the suspect who had tried to get inside.

A cell phone which was believed to be Vandenburgh’s was found near the scene.

During the investigation, the owner of Diegos said he had hired Vandenburgh as a cook and began experiencing money shortages and cash theft from employees’ bags. A set of master keys also went missing.

The owner said he began to screw the door shut at night until a new set of locks and alarm system could be installed, which is why Vandenburgh was not able to enter that night.

On April 4, police pulled Vandenburgh over for having a brake light out on his car. His name came back with two active warrants for failure to appear in court and connection to the attempted break in at Diegos.

The above report details arrests made by the Newport Police Department. Descriptions of all events are based solely on police officer reports provided to Patch.
