Newport residents and Salve Regina University students have taken to Twitter to react to the news that a shooting/stabbing occurred off Memorial Boulevard Tuesday morning.
Salve Regina University issued an alert to students at 10:46 a.m. letting students know about the incident and advising them to stay on campus. Students have shared details about the alert on Twitter.
Salve student Kyle Hamilton said students are receiving concerned phone calls from family who have heard the news.
"It's crazy that something that is this severe can happen so close to campus and to some of our off-campus houses," he said. "Getting calls from home...Was kind of annoying at first...but after thinking about it if I had heard there was a shooting near my home in Connecticut I would be on the phone immediately as well."
Zeena Barbarita, a junior at Salve, said she was at work when everyone's phone went off and they got the alert from the university.
"Basically everyone was just confused, but relieved that it was not actually on campus," she said.
Police say the incident was between two women and that it has been contained. Follow Patch for updates.
