Meet the Candidate: Linda Finn To Run Against Rep. Reilly
Middletown resident Linda Finn, owner of Linda Finn Garden Design, is running for a seat in the House of Representatives to represent District 72 (Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth)
Patch sat down with Middletown resident Linda Dill Finn, who is running against incumbent republican Daniel Reilly to represent District 72 in the House of Representatives. Finn, a first-time candidate, describes herself as a progressive, socially-liberal democrat.
"A lot of people just need a chance," said Finn.
We put together this snapshot reference of her background and key issues to introduce you to the candidate.
General Background
- Finn was born in Carmel, NY
- When Finn was in 9th grade, her parents divorced. Her mother who was from Bristol, moved back to Rhode Island. After the divorce, Finn lived between Rhode Island and New York.
- She has been married to her husband, John Fin, for 16 years
- They have two children, Phoebe (16) and Jack (14). Phoebe attends Wheeler School in Providence and Jack attends St. George’s School in Middletown.
- The family moved to Middletown in 1998, after Jack was born.
Finn describes her background:
I am from two very different families. My Mom's side of the family immigrated from Italy. My grandmother was the Secretary of the Union at United Rubber in Bristol. They both were very hard working with strong family ties. They loved the beach and outdoors and my siblings and I have so many fond memories particularly around this time of year. We always went very early to the Fourth of July parade to get the best possible seats -- sometimes at 5 AM!
My Father's Dad was the first to go to college in his family and became a well known businessman in Carmel, New York, He passed down an entrepreneurial spirit to his children and grandchildren and owned and started many businesses throughout his life.
My grandmother was well read and volunteered much of her time at the local library and encouraged us all to go to college and get the best grades we possibly could.
Professional/Educational
- Graduated from Barrington High School in 1977
- Graduated Boston University with a BA in Marketing in 1981
- After graduation, Finn worked in the financial services industry until her daughter was born in 1996.
- Finn said she tried to go back to work after he children were born but she was unhappy. In March of 1998 she took landscape design courses. In 2003, she took her new passion to the next level and started her own company, Linda Finn Garden Design.
- Finn has designed several public and private gardens in Newport County
- 20 year member of Saint Columba's Chapel in Middletown.
Community Involvement
- Finn said she decided to run for office since she has been involved with several nonprofits in the community and would like to expand her reach to the community.
- She is the past president of Women’s Resource Center of Newport and Bristol Counties, and has been involved in the organization since 1989.
- She currently serves as president of Baby Steps, which is a nonprofit organization based in Newport that works to ensure local children are prepared for kindergarten. Finn said studies demonstrate if children enter kindergarten with vocabulary that is below average, they will struggle to catch up.
- Finn has served as Assistant Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher and member of the Vestry at Saint Columba's Chapel.
Politics
- Finn described her political views as a progressive, socially liberal democrat.
- Education is one of her top issues. “In Middletown, students can either take art or a language, not both,” said Finn. She said there are students who slip through the cracks if they do not excel in either math, science or English.
- The tax structure in Rhode Island should be examined for both businesses and individuals, said Finn. She said she can leverage her financial industry background experience in the role.
- Finn said although it is not one of her campaign issues, she is a strong supporter of gay marriage.
- She is an advocate of Planned Parenthood and politically supports their views
Hobbies
- Finn said she is an avid reader
- She also enjoys playing tennis and skiing in the winter.

Kids at two spoiled brat academies, but public school education is her number one priority? Really?
No mention of the spouse's business/employment (the number one source of conflict of interest related corruption in RI). I do like the union-grandmother story, though it's the closest thing to working class she's ever gonna get. I'll bet she's for extreme liberalization of immigration laws (gotta keep that labor pool cheap in landscaping), again, it's something she cares about but not a campaign issue per se.
Reilly's a bible thumping doofus but it sounds like she's one as well. Liberation theology is cut from the exact same cloth as fundementalism: Jesus told me to do it...what is it with RI and this fascination with a higher power?

Let's see, besides name calling your point boils down to "she's a beautiful person". I missed the day in PoliSci they taught beauty as a necessary component to effective governance.
However if elections are in RI are, as you allege, beauty contests, then the veil of misunderstanding has been lifted from my eyes! When I think of RI’s electoral process as a student council election- or the homecoming queen selection process- then I finally have an explanation for its results: massive debt...cosmetic change... infantile spending initiatives...civic goals crafted by overly tanned princesses who just want world peace and a two hour recess.
She spends on SIXTY THOUSAND DOLLARS per year on her children (or allows to be spent on them via financial aid). That is more than the TOTAL INCOME of nearly TWO THIRDS of RI households. It's almost ten thousand dollars higher than the state median. I can grudgingly abide by public school teachers sending their kids to private school but a legislator that stands on the issue of public school education has ZERO credibility when they think their own brood is above the fray. Nobody's education is worth double the poverty level. Period. To think otherwise is pure elitism.
Secondly, please explain to me why 'sweet', 'beautiful' Linda is so willing to mention her job, her Jesus work, her grandmother, her whole family history, her working motherhood....all that stuff and, yet, her hubby and job goes unmentioned. That's pretty freaking odd.

The RI. economy is a direct result of progressive, socially liberal democrat thinking. That's why we are the worst place to do business in the country. Jobs and business leaving the State. Over one hundred and thirty thousand manufacturing jobs have left the state since the 80's . Do we want this State to become insolvent ?

Let me bottom line this for some of you:
Rep. Reilly sponsored an "ultrasound bill" related to a woman's right to choose. This is a career ending offense. Until he had done so, he might have gone under the radar for a long time since other races have much more import. However, it is what it is.
Therefore, a recruitment effort was undertaken. After serious careful consideration of who might put themselves forward, it became obvious that soon to be Rep. Finn was of great caliber and very capable of doing the job.
Therefore, she will support of the Democratic Party, those who care about choice on Aquidneck Island, and many others who would like to see a change from the unacceptable to the very talented.
Those of you who find that unsettling can certainly rally behind the incumbent and try to save him. I wish you the best of luck. I also remind you that the House is not 66-9 by accident. It is not for me to tell you how to waste your time nor is it for me to try to talk you out of a fool's errand.
If the RIGOP actually had a Chair with the average college intern level of talent, this race might been a bell weather and by definition interesting. He does not so the incumbent will be left to his own devices. I suppose this would be a good time to thank him for his service.

Hey I did not know that about Reilly.....so what is new? The inmates have taken over the GOP and run that party drooling and frothing all over. Sad.

You brag about the 66-9 majority in the house as if they are doing a good job at running this state or something. Seriously, don't brag about your team when your team is constantly striking out. And before you try to paint me as a conservative, I'm not. This election cycle however, I am taking a different approach. I will not be voting for any incumbents. I think it's time to put some RI politicians out of their jobs and start all over again. I think that a bunch of school children could randomly make better decisions than the current version of the Rhode Island General Assembly. So great...I'm a Liberal and you're a Liberal and so are 66 out of the 75 members of the House and our state is still in shambles. Must be the Republicans fault, huh?

Joe.....my remarks may seem ignorant to someone who only looks at the current talking points.......true RI has the same problem as Mass had a few years ago.....we will never be able to upend the entrenched pols from Prov and Pawtucket....but....and it is a big but....the quality of pol from down here has to be superior to that that exists elsewhere....and I find that a woman like Ms. Finn transcends the useless right wing philosophy of Mr. Reilly. If you think that she is less than a good rep. then do not vote for her.
She has my vote and she represents a better and more ar ticulate vision in the govt. So there

Sousa...what does progressie and liberal thinking social democrat have to do with the disappearing jobs here? The basic base has been supplanted by outsourced labor overseas. Get a grip and think a little bit. Your cliche's are a bit archaic

"what does progressie and liberal thinking social democrat have to do with the disappearing jobs here?"
How about super Majority legislature, controled by the DEMS for over 78 years now. Just saying he has a valid point in this State. ;-}

I get that....but what does that have to do with the loss of jobs....that is in the private sector. The industry that was here until 1965 has left and nothing has taken its' place....There is just not a qualified labor 'gene' pool available to justify big new development from afar.....and Boston is so close....

Mike it is all about that in my opinion.
It was that ideology that drove industry out of this State; it was they who destroyed the Fishing industry.
They pushed the State to be dependent on a tourism industry like Greece (the parallels are unbelievable) that provides nothing but low wage seasonal jobs. They destroyed the education system in this State.
I blame both parties nationwide, but in this state, there is only a single party rule, even the party governorship means nothing. No bill can be vetoed unless the legislature allows it period.
Not to mention the total corruption of this state which today still ranks in the top ten, down from the usual top 5 a few years ago.
We are also near the top as the worst State for businesses to invest in or even come here, and now they just think gambling will solve it all, just like the lottery was touted as solution to all end education problems and lower Property taxes.
Sorry but Joe is absolutely correct on the policies in this State in my opinion.
When you only have one party ideology for 78 years, where else can the blame go?
Most GOP in this are about 10% of any local or State offices. Even then we have had so many in name only or independent in name only also so it appears there is some equality, but that is a lie.

On the labor gene pool, those who do have the skills have no choice but to move just across the border to MA, to save on comute fees, heck the majority that work in the defence industry even in this State live in MA.
This State is so over taxed it has reached unsustainable levels and the State Government has shrunk, not one iota. They could careless about the labor force getting high paying jobs. I has been like that since the Navy pulled out. The guy in office now, whose father (he was Secretary of the Navy at the time) could have cared less about that, his son just gives rhetoric so far and no concrete idea's other than 2 pages of new taxes, on everything from water, to tanning salons and medicines.
He also was only a GOP in name ony in congress before he decided to become independent in name only and won by getting 34% of the vote.
Joe Sousa.

So the biggest specific knock on Dan Reilly is that he voted for ultrasound prior to abortion. What's wrong with being informed and cautious before ending an innocent life?
For years, Rhode Island has been among the worst states in the union for business. Without a decent business environment, jobs, tax revenues, infrastructure—virtually everything that makes for quality of life—suffers. Liberal Democrats have dominated the state for more than seven decades. You have to be dishonest or a fool to deny their policies are not responsible for the state being bankrupt and corrupt.
Utopian progressive nonsense not only doesn't work—just look at collapsing Europe—it destroys the freedoms and opportunities that have made America the greatest place on Earth for people to achieve and succeed.
Dan Reilly has been a hardworking, intelligent, openminded, approachable representative. Perhaps best of all he is fiscally conservative, a desperately needed voice opposing the mindless tax-and-spend liberal Democrats dominating Capitol Hill.
The last thing District 72 and Rhode Island needs is another "caring" progressive, like Ms. Finn, to throw away our tax dollars on policies that have bankrupted the state while ultimately benefitting no one.
My vote is going to Dan Reilly. He's earned it.

I worked at the women's resource center while Linda was on the board. She was hard working and cared. She was not there because she wanted to feel better about herself. She was a worker. We should be thankful that new people are willing to run. I don't know if I would. Who wants to be a target to bullies that hide behind a keyboard. Not only will Linda get my vote, I'll help out in her election.

More name calling. Please explain to me how your progressive belief system justifies directing regressive ad hominem towards anyone who chooses to differ with your world view or belief system. So all those with whom you disagree are branded bullies or just the ones who you assume don't like you? Grow up, child. Howard Zinn, one of the progressives great patrons, said "dissent is the highest form of patriotism".
Your story speaks to the commendable side of Finn's nature but governing in the name of 'caring' is a slippery slope- the same one that dope, Reilly, has coasted on for four years. So, I'm not sure if there's a defensible logic to replacing new blood with...more new blood.

At least she hopefully paid her taxes, unlike Rep. Reilly
Also, Rep. Reilly starts law school next year, which means that he is inelligible to serve as a State Rep. due to the enormous time commitment presented by attending law school for 3 years. Rep. Reilly doesn't have enough integrity or honesty to admit that fact however.

John Weisley - When, exactly, did Rep. Reilly not pay his taxes? Please enlighten us! And apparently now people are ineligible to run for office because of the time commitments the rest of their lives require - I guess the legislature can just be made up of garden designers! Then all of our problems will go away!

Just 2 quick notes:
1. I guess somebody should Joe Sousa what happened to the candidates he supported last cycle versus the ones I supported. My team won every race but one. Yes, it was Linc who beat us so it was big, but it was 1. Joe has 0.0 winners to his credit. Oh that's right, he's more pure or something. Maybe you could then ask why he is no longer welcome in the Democratic Party.
2. I am not one who think the problems Rep. Reilly's parents face are shared by him. I think his foray into law school is admirable. What is not admirable is his intolerable attitude towards women and his position on Liberty in general. It is for these reasons that he will no longer serve.

Rep. Reilly's parents are some of the largest lax delinquents in the history of the State of Rhode Island. During a 5 yr period, they amassed $1.3 mil in back income taxes, then fled to Florida. Do you know how much income it takes to rack up $1.3 mil in backed income taxes??? It means that his parents grossed at least $2.4 mil per year, for 5 yrs! and paid NO TAXES! Who does that???
Law school is 3 yrs in duration. It requires 100% of your time. Watch the movie "the paper chase." Only a fool, an egotistical fool at that would try to represent a community while going to law school. Just by being arrogant enough to propose that idea shows how out of touch and arrogant he is. Is that who we want representing us?? I don't know who Ms. Linda Finn is, but she at least has a family, children. She is not a little boy. She has at least some measure of experience.
