Meet Newport's Iron Man Competitors
Seven Newporters are competing in Sunday's Ironman Rhode Island Triathlon in Providence.
Seven Newporters will compete in Amica's Ironman Rhode Island 70.3 race on Sunday. As part of a large field, they hope to reach their personal best and to qualify for the next stage of racing.
Broken into thirteen age groups from 18 to 80+ years old, competitors will start the race by swimming for 1.2 miles in Olney Pond in Lincoln Woods Park. Then they’ll bike 56 miles through Smithfield, Chepachet, Clayville and Scituate until they reach Providence, where they’ll run through the East side along Blackstone Boulevard to downtown Providence, ending at the Capitol.
Regular mortals may gaze in awe at these fit athletes, but many of them have stories that could inspire others to try it for themselves.
