Man Wanted on Assault Charges Allegedly Stabs Himself

The following incident was reported by the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A 42-year-old Newport man allegedly stabbed himself with a knife Wednesday after he was told he was wanted for assault, according to the Newport Police Department.  His condition is unknown.

Luis Moura, 42, of an unknown address was arrested around 9:00 p.m. on a third offense domestic assault charge and a violation of a no contact order charge, both felonies.

A woman told Moura that police were looking for him because he broke his sister’s arm, according to reports. She allegedly said if he didn’t turn himself in, she would call police. Moura reportedly told her he would rather die than go to jail.

She told police she left the room, and when she returned, he had a stab wound to his chest and she called police. Police found Moura unresponsive on the couch, holding a knife.  Police drew their guns and told him to drop the knife, but police said he appeared to be unconscious. Police used an extendable baton to knock the knife out of his hand and found two other knives on Moura, said police.

Newport Fire Department responded took him to Newport Hospital. On the stretcher, he allegedly said “I just want to die.”
