Man Attempting to Buy Two Kilos of Cocaine Arrested
The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
Marqui C. Benton, 28, of 1102 Heck St., Asbury Park, NY, was arrested around 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, for a substance conspiracy charge.
Newport VICE unit and Providence Drug Enforcement Administration agents had been undercover for about a month arranging a deal with Benton to sell two kilograms of cocaine. Benton agreed to buying one kilo on Wednesday for $30,000 and said he would pay for the other one next week.
Police seized $35,000 from Benton when they met up with him at the Citgo station on Connell Highway. Benton and another man, who was later released, were detained when undercover police said to follow them to a truck with a hidden trap.
