Los Lobos to Play Sunset Music Series

The Newport Yachting Center announced Los Lobos will return to the Sunset Music Series this summer.

announced that multiple Grammy award winning band, Los Lobos, will be returning to the Nantucket Nectars Sunset Music Series stage on Friday, July 13. 

Tickets to the concert are $24 for standard seating and $44 for preferred seating and will be available for purchase at 10:00 a.m. this Wednesday, April 11th online at www.newportwaterfrontevents.com or by calling the Newport Yachting Center Box Office at (401) 846-1600.  This headliner announcement is the fifth in what will be an expanded 2012 Sunset Music Series through the summer with more concerts planned than ever before.

“When Los Lobos played our Sunset Music Series in 2009, it felt like the energy of the band and its enthusiastic fans were literally going to raise the roof off of our tent,” said Michele Maker Palmieri, General Manager of the Newport Yachting Center.  “Their combination of rock, country and blues music, along with a Spanish and Mexican twist, is the perfect blend for a beautiful summer night on the Newport waterfront…so we jumped at the chance to welcome the band back to our stage.”

Over the past 35 years, the East L.A. five-piece American Chicano rock band known as Los Lobos has notched a #1 single with the 1987 sensation, “La Bamba”, won three Grammy awards, sold millions of records and shared Rolling Stone’s “Artist of the Year” honors with Bruce Springsteen.

Their major label debut, How Will the Wolf Survive?, made Rolling Stone magazine’s “500 In the late 1980s and early 1990s Los Lobos continued to record and tour extensively throughout the world and opening for Bob Dylan, U2 and the Grateful Dead.  In 1995, the band wrote the score for the film Desperado and its album track, “Mariachi Suite”, won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

Numerous studio albums have followed, including Colossal Head in 1996, Good Morning Aztlan in 2002 and The Town and the City in 2006, along with a box set and a Greatest Hits package.  This proliferation of music led Rolling Stone to write, “with the exception of U2, no other band has stayed on the top of its game as long as Los Lobos.”  The group’s other soundtrack credits include La Bamba, Bull Durham, Nacho Libre and Rango.  In 2010, Los Lobos released its first album of new material in more than four years entitled, Tin Can Trust.
