The holiday season isn't (just) about gifts under a Christmas Tree. It's the time of year many people reach out to others through holiday cards and holiday parties - as well as organizations that count on volunteers to provide vital services to the community.
Here are a few ideas to volunteer around town:
- Sachuest Point is always looking for volunteers! The wildife refuge is planning on re-opening at the end of Janurary after Hurricane Sandy threw cement blocks across the roads and weakened the banks.
- Family Services/Newport is looking for volunteers in Middletown
- Clean Ocean Access organizes dozens of beach clean-ups every year in Newport and Middletown. They are holding their 5th slideshow and fundraiser at Easton's Point Pub in Middletown on Janurary 25 at 7 p.m with four bands, free food and information on how to get involved. Tickets sell out every year, so must purchase in advance.
- Through Serve Rhode Island, you can search for service and volunteer opportunities by zip code and using keywords.
Do you know of other volunteer opportunities? Tell us in the comments or get the word out about your agency with a Newport Patch blog!

Don't forget the Potter League, they always have opportunities for children as well as adults.

I know that the Red Cross is also looking for volunteers as I attended one of their volunteer orientation sessions earlier this month. There are many different ways in which one can help Red Cross from office work, to blood drives, emergency assistance planning, etc. Go to the Red Cross website for more info. The volunteer director for this area, Jason, was very helpful. Go to an orientation session to see if this is something you might like doing.
