For a locavore like me, Thanksgiving is a dream holiday. It doesn’t get much better than celebrating the season’s harvest with family and friends. The Aquidneck Grower’s Market hosts a special Farmers’ Market the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It was bustling when we arrived. Robin Hollow Farm had some beautiful arrangements perfect for centerpieces and other Thanksgiving decorations.
The folks at the Simmon’s Farm stand were serving multiple customers at once, weighing produce, adding up orders, all the while greeting their market regulars with holiday wishes. We chose some of their gorgeous purple-white turnips, carrots, and sweet potatoes.
Here are a few tips that I picked up from Cooking, my go-to, how-to cookbook by James Peterson: 1) Choose a pan that is just big enough for your turkey. 2) Don’t use a roasting rack—the juices will evaporate and burn. 3) Instead, put the neck and gizzards on the bottom of the roasting pan (I also added some chopped onion and garlic) and place the turkey on top.

"Thanksgiving is a dream holiday. It doesn't get much better than celebrating the season's harvest with family and friends," writes Patch Our Local Harvest Columnist Jessica Walsh.

Last Saturday's weekly grower's market at Newport Vineyards also marked the end of the harvest season that brought forth a wonderful bounty for all of Aquidneck Island to enjoy, as well as many great suggestions from Jess on how to enjoy our local harvest at home.

In this special photo essay, join Jessica and her partner, Ben Ellcome, as they celebrate another great harvest with family and friends.

P.S. The end of the harvest season doesn't mean Jessica's weekly columns will lay dormant until spring. Check back each week for a "locavore's" guide to getting through the winter, as well as great crafting project ideas!
