The University of Rhode Island is seeking volunteers to keep an eye on 19 residential facilities without power.
The University of Rhode Island is seeking volunteers to serve as Fire Watch Detail in housing in Kingston, according to Serve Rhode Island.
There are 19 residential facilities without power that need to be supervised 24/7. Those on Fire Watch Detail will walk the building hourly to inspect the fire alarm system and will be asked to keep an updated log. They will be expected to respond to any emergencies that might occur and to notify the fire department and building occupants as necessary.
Starting today, Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 4 PM, volunteers will potentially be needed to work 4-hour shifts through the night, depending on when power returns to the URI campus. Shifts are:
- 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM
- 8:00 PM to 12 Midnight
- 12 Midnight to 4:00 AM
- 4:00 AM to 8:00 AM
Volunteers will be asked to come to the URI Public Safety Building 15 minutes prior to your shift for a brief orientation.
TO SIGN UP FOR A 4-HOUR SHIFT visit www.surveymonkey.com/s/N3B9N83 or contact Serve Rhode Island at (401) 331-2298.

Power has been restored to the residence halls at the University of Rhode Island's main campus in Kingston, and Serve Rhode Island has canceled its call for volunteers to serve on fire watch teams

By fire code, when there is a life safety issue and the fire alarm system is down for more than 4 hours, a fire watch has to be posted.
