E-ZPass Computer Systems Down From June 23-26

Transponders will still work on the Newport Pell Bridge, however users will not be able to replenish account online or by phone.

Due to circumstances beyond the control of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA), ACS, the host of E-ZPass, will shut down its computer system from Thursday, June 23 through Sunday, June 26, affecting customers in R.I., N.H. and N.J.  

This will not affect usage of the E-ZPass transponders on the Newport Pell Bridge or other E-ZPass-enabled toll plazas in other states during that time period.   The gates will continue to rise if accounts have sufficient funds. 

Owners will not be able to replenish accounts online or via phone.   Because of the system outage, RITBA cannot issue new transponders or replenish accounts, and will close the E-ZPass office on Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25.

“ACS, the company which manages the E-ZPass system for Rhode Island, needs to suspend services while they conduct system-wide maintenance,” said David A. Darlington, chairman of the board of directors of RITBA.  “The brief interruption is regrettable but unavoidable.  They have assured us that upgrades will be made so that this will not occur again.  We hope this will inconvenience only a very small number of customers, and we ask E-ZPass users to check their accounts to ensure they have sufficient funds to cover their bridge crossings during the outage,” he said.

Customers are strongly urged to replenish accounts, if needed, before the shutdown.   No action is necessary for accounts scheduled for automatic replenishment during that time frame.

The E-ZPass office will reopen on Monday, June 27 at 8:00 a.m.   Online and phone access to accounts will be available on June 27 at 12:01 a.m. 

As of May 31, RITBA has sold 111,653 transponders to 81,334 customers. 

Normal E-ZPass office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.   Proof of R.I. residency is required whether transponders are purchased in person or at www.ritba.org.   For questions about E-ZPass, call RITBA customer service center at 1-877-743-9727.
