Class of 2011 Graduates From Rogers HIgh School

Many students will be attending colleges and universities in the fall.

Students, teachers, family and friends packed the auditorium Friday night to celebrate the 140 students graduating from the Class of 2011.

Of the 140 graduates, there were 87 different college acceptances.

The colleges and universities they will attend are as diverse as the graduates themselves. Some will travel as far away as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Art Institute of San Diego, Middle Tennessee State University, and Columbia College of Chicago to continue their education; others will remain close to home at universities and colleges like Brown University, Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island School of Design, Salve Regina University and Roger Williams University.

After remarks from Newport Mayor Stephen Waluk and Newport Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Ambrogi, it was time to hear from the graduates.

Senior Class President Cassandra McCarthy was the first student to address her fellow classmates.

She spoke of the last few months and how many “lasts” she was experiencing, such as her last baseball game and the last pep rally.

McCarthy also credited her time at Rogers for preparing her for the future.

“We are now prepared for all the firsts life has to offer,” she said.

Next up were twins Lukas and Olivia Chaves, who were valedictorian and salutatorian of their class.

Each spoke separately but conveyed the same message of growth, commitment and preparedness that Rogers High School gave them, and credited their family for their success.

“We both really encourage each other and the support and love we receive at home with our family really help us a lot,” said Olivia Chaves. Her brother added, “We all just stay together as a family. We really love each other and that’s what counts and that’s why we are so successful."
