Blizzard To Bring 18-24 Inches of Snow

The incoming winter storm is officially the Blizzard of 2013.

The National Weather Service upgraded the winter to a blizzard watch on Thursday morning.

The NWS predicts snow accumulation of 18 to 24 inches.

Snow is expected to begin on Friday morning and increase in intensity by the afternoon. Around the coast, the snow could switch to rain in the afternoon, which would impact accumulation.

Strong winds of possible hurricane force are also expected Friday night into Saturday. Wind speeds could reach 25-35 mph, with gusts up to 75 mph.

NWS warns that travel may become nearly impossible due to blowing and drifting snow.

What is a Blizzard?

A blizzard watch means there is a potential for considerable falling and/or blowing snow, explains the NWS.  Winds or gusts are over 35 mph and visibilities below a quarter of mile for at least three hours. Whiteout conditions are possible and travel is dangerous.

Just went down spring up memorial and down Kay street, and there is no plowing going on! This takes incompetence to new levels, even for Newport. Kay is critical for ambulances. Wake up City government!
