Beauty and the Beast Opens Tonight at Rogers High School

Rogers Theater Company presents "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" this weekend.

A tragic beast will prowl tonight.

The Rogers Theater Company will present "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" this Friday and Saturday night, June 3rd and 4th at 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. The production, a favorite of the students who chose it while considering options for their spring play, is a milestone for the company for a number of reasons.

Six of the performers, all seniors, including lead Sara Sconyers, are ending their high school areers with the play. Class valedictorian Lukas Chaves, who plays the Beast, will make both his dramatic debut and farewell performance in the play.

According to Peter Corr, drama advisor and the director of the play, “So much more is involved in every respect for Beauty and the Beast than for any show we have ever done. But the level of talent that the student actors possess never ceases to amaze me.”

The distinctive sets and costumes come from a number of sources. Co-director Emma Sconyers designed and created many of the costumes, while others were borrowed from the Rhode Island Youth Theater. Corr and a crew of former students, as well as the current cast and crew, assembled the sets for the production.

“Since we are a self-supporting club within the school and we have no direct school funding we therefore have to raise all our own funds to do the rentals and to get materials, so we can't go nearly as large or as extravagant as we would like to," Corr said.

Asked if there were any surprises in this production, Corr replied, “I'm sure there will be since it is live theatre. Let’s just hope they are good surprises!”

Tickets for both performances will be available at the door for $5.
