The Breakers Gates Restoration Receives Award
Restoration of the main gates of The Breakers (check out the "Before" and "After" photos here) has been honored with a Rhody Award from Preserve Rhode Island and the RI Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission. The Rhody Awards honor individuals, organizations and projects for their contributions to the preservation of Rhode Island's historic resources. The main entrance and pedestrian gates were restored in 2009; work is now underway on the restoration of the north pedestrian gates.
Three other local restoration projects have also received awards: Beavertail Light in Jamestown, the Travers House on Newport's Memorial Boulevard, and the Casino Theatre at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. The awards will be presented at a Preservation Celebration at the Casino Theatre on October 21. The Celebration is open to the public.
