This year, on March 16, 2013, the Newport Energy and Environment Commission (NEEC) is once again setting up recycling bins, marching in the parade and collecting recyclables afterwards. We are partnering with the St. Patrick’s Parade leadership, Mr. Dennis Sullivan; the Newport Clean City Coordinator Kristin Littlefield; The Met School Green Team led by Ms. Cara Willi; and Matt Plumb, manager of the Brick Alley Pub.
Last year the Brick Alley Pub organized a group of volunteers who scoured the streets after the parade and picked up trash as well as materials to be recycled.
This year, drawing on the experience and enthusiasm of the Brick Alley Pub volunteers, the NEEC is seeking other businesses all along Thames Street and America’s Cup to join us on Sunday morning after the parade in a similar but expanded effort.
Our goal is to assign each participating merchant a block or so along the parade route. On Sunday morning, March 17, beginning at 9:00 a.m. merchants and their volunteer group will pick up trash and collect clean and empty plastic bottles and aluminum cans for recycling.
Brick Alley Pub did a tremendous job of cleaning up last year. With cooperation from local businesses along the route, we could end up with a clean and sparkling city in no time!

Why not give everyone who's arrested that day the opportunity to have their records expunged by showing up at 6.00 a.m. to clean up the wreckage?

There is certainly some merit to your suggestion, but first of all, that would require all sorts of permissions from the legal system, which I do not have time to pursue; besides which, our commission would much prefer that our volunteers are there because they care about the environment.
