Muriel Hilda (Forrest) Porter, 95, of 16 Tilley Avenue, Newport, RI, formerly of 33 Mann Avenue, Newport RI, passed away November 15, 2010, at Grand Islander Health Care Center.
She was the wife of the late John W. Porter, Jr.
Born in Fall River, MA on April 5, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Elizabeth (Dwyer) Forrest.
Mrs. Porter was employed at both Aquidneck Medical Center and Edgehill Newport as a switchboard operator for 20 years, retiring in 1991. She also worked as a local real estate broker and during World War II she worked on the Navy Base in Newport. She also enjoyed bowling in the NUSC league. Mrs. Porter enjoyed cooking and gardening. She always had her wood stove lit and a meal ready for guests.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy H. Sullivan of Newport, RI, and her sons Donald J. Hart of Little Compton, RI, John "Jeff" Porter of Nottingham, NH, and Christopher Porter of Middletown, RI, and her sister Audrey Cookson of Marston Mills, MA. She also leaves behind four grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Michael E. Hart. She was the sister of the late Donald Forrest and Raymond Forrest, June Forrest and Virginia Heffernan.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, November 17 from 11 - 1 p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a prayer service at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, RI, on Monday, November 22, 2010, at 1 p.m.
