James Michael McCarthy, 91, of Newport passed away peacefully to God from the Heatherwood Nursing Home on October 13, 2010, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Newport on October 25, 1919, he was the beloved son of James P. and Laura A. (Harrington) McCarthy of Newport, and leaves his dear sister Mary J. (McCarthy) Senior and her husband Clifford E. Senior of Newport. James was predeceased by his dear sister Laura A. (McCarthy) Balus and her son James Balus of Newport.
James leaves several nieces and nephews, Michol Balus Murphy, together with her husband Joseph of Portsmouth, Eric Senior, together with his wife Pia of Jamestown, RI, and Colette Senior Rodrigues and her husband Manuel of Middletown, RI. Uncle Jimmy also leaves several grandnieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
James served in the United States Coastguard during World War II, and upon returning home worked for several years for the General Electric Monowatt Co. in Newport. In later years he became self-employed in various mechanical trades.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 16, at 9 a.m. in Jesus Savior Church, 509 Broadway, Newport. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, on Friday, October 15 from 2 - 4 p.m.
