Coin Counting Week Benefits MLK Community Center

BankNewport’s Coin Counting Week, held June 18 through June 23, was a great success due to the community’s participation and interest in its neighborhood non-profit organizations.

During the week-long event, the community turned their coins into cash using the branch coin counting machine at the Bank’s Jamestown, Middletown, Portsmouth and two Newport branch locations.  The coin machine was free to anyone who participated in the week-long event.

Based on the amount of coins collected throughout the week at these participating branch locations, BankNewport extended a $2,500 donation to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center (MLK).  In addition to the donation, the Bank also contributed 100 reusable grocery totes for the MLK Community Center clients using Pantry Express, a weekly fresh produce distribution program for all of Newport County.

The mission of the MLK Community Center is to provide nutritional, educational, social and referral services to hundreds of individuals and families throughout Newport County.

BankNewport’s Coin Counting Week was a bank-wide initiative to help raise awareness of local human services organizations.  Beneficiaries from surrounding communities also included Cove Homes Incorporated, Galilee Mission, Riverwood Mental Health Services, Singing Out Against Hunger and Wickford Heels and Wheels.

BankNewport, founded in 1819 and currently holding $1.1 billion in assets, is an FDIC-insured savings bank and is a subsidiary of the Mutual Holding Company, OceanPoint Financial Partners, MHC.  Along with its financial partner, OceanPoint Insurance Agency, Inc., BankNewport is proud to serve the financial needs of customers from banking and insurance offices located throughout Rhode Island.
