Arthur M. Dring, Jr., 80, of Dudley Ave, Newport, died Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at home. He was the husband of Janet E. (Smith) Dring. Born in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late Dr. Arthur M. Dring and Anna (Dunn) Dring.
Arthur was a graduate of Rogers High School. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Science as a 1953 graduate of Georgetown University and had also studied at URI, Brown University, Providence College, RIC, and Bridgewater State College. Arthur retired from Thomson Jr. High School, where had the positions of teacher, science department head, vice principal, principal and baseball coach. He was an assistant track coach at Roger's High School and also served as an assistant to the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Vincent Trainor.
He was a parishioner, Eucharistic minister and Lector of St. Joseph's Church, served on the Parish Council, was a past president and member of the Newport Lions Club, a past vice president and member of the Sons of the Revolution, a board member of the Newport Hospital and Bank of Newport, a former board member of the Newport Black Ships Festival, a former member and chairman of the Newport Community Taskforce on Drugs and a member of the Goat Island Yacht Club, Hazards Beach, Redwood Library, Knights of Columbus, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Preservation Society of Newport, Newport Art Association and Alden Kindred of America. He was also the Director and co-chairman of the Vision Screening Program.
Mr. Dring was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and a golfer. He was a six wicket croquet player and a member of the Sarasota Country Croquet Club and the Tennis Hall of Fame Croquet Club.
Besides his wife, he leaves his children Michael P. Dring of Merrimack, N.H., James A. Dring of Newport, RI, John T. Dring of Portsmouth, RI, and Catherine A. Roberts of Middletown, RI; his grandchildren Taylor Patterson, Masen Patterson, Owen Roberts, Ella Dring, Julia Dring, Amelia Dring, Christopher Dring and Jack Dring.
He was the brother of the late Anne L. Dring.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 25, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Mann Ave and Broadway, Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 24, from 2 - 5 p.m. in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport.
